It will appear from these Papers that when Mr Mills left Houghong the Governor advanced him £100, to enable him to pay his way home, for his journey and that Lorabrey considered that payment of Salary, and not in lieu of a Gift, as an advance.
The light Gift, sanctioned that proceeding. W. Mills however, as has been since explained regarded the above payment as a Gift, and relied upon his half Salary for his maintenance or whilst in this Country. Having accordingly applied at this office for the Salary supposed to be due to him, he was informed that there was nothing owing to him in Consequence of the advance made to him at Hong Kong.
